With his
Twin Turbo case under his belt, forum member Hal was determined to move away from "the whole computer case re-mod" - taking a production chassis and modding it. "I decided I wanted to take it a bit further this time, and really try out my skill and patience! I wanted to do something very slick and that would really stand out." Admirable ambitions for any modder.
He was out shopping at the US department store
Target when he spotted this chrome pedal bin. In the best modding spirit, he thought to himself "I found my starting block" and Project: Trashed was born. Like
Tonkputer before him, the challenge was to take an ordinary, everyday vessel and convert it into a work of art.
"Since this was my first total conversion build, and I would have to make/fabricate a lot of parts, I needed an overall plan!" Indeed - you may measure twice, cut once, but before all that, you should draw things out and plan them on paper, where design tweaks don't cost you any money (or Dremel wheels).
Mask everything up to avoid surface scratching as well as unwanted, accidental slipping when Dremeling and the first stage is complete. The work came at a cost: Hal was working with a broken hand, set in plaster following an earlier incident unrelated to modding. His worklog contains this genius disclaimer:
Now just a small thing… I do not recommend using a dremel at high speed with a cutting attachment with the use of only one hand! Not only is it dangerous, but stupid… so naturally I promptly started cutting away. A few nicks on the cast later…
Now that's what we call dedication!
Strip away the masking and things are beginning to hot up, if you excuse the pun.
Fast forward nearly five months and this is where the project is: sexy Candy Apple Red paint on the outside, and a fully working system on the inside. Hal insists there is "tons more still to come! Don't worry it's still up and kicking!" so check out his
Worklog thread and post your thoughts & feedback in his
